opinions and advice requested

it's been over a year, and it is officially time to do something with our bedroom wall.

it's one of the largest walls in our house that is uninterrupted with vents or anything else, and i feel like it could be SO cute. but i have made it look even more blank by doing NOTHING with it for so long.

here's what's on the short wall that's just to the right of the bed, if that helps you visualize it all:so here's where you come in.these are the things i have for the wall. i've had this frame for 3 years, and it has sat on the floor the entire time collecting dust. mostly because i don't have a picture to put in it (it's square, and the picture size is 8x8...so i should be able to get a good picture of us in 8x10 and crop an inch off the top and bottom, right?) but also because i didn't know what else i wanted up with it. but i have recently found a few really great things that match my bedroom really well but i don't have dresser space or table space in here...so shelves are the next best thing, right?

now here are the 2 shelves i got:

the long one is 3 feet and the other is just a small ledge, and they're both black (and yes, they're both from pottery barn kids...i like that store, okay?)

can i put all three of these things on my wall? my mom suggested not putting anything dead center...having the frame a little off-center to the right and the shelves a little off-center to the left. i'm not sure. i was thinking more along the lines of the long one in the center with the frame sitting ON it (off-center), with the small ledge below it. but maybe i could hang the picture in the center, the long frame below it and the ledge on a different wall? i just can't decide, and these shelves will require VERY large holes that i do not want to have to do more than once. help!!!

This will be difficult to explain without visuals, but here goes. How about: the picture not very high, but high enough that if you're in bed and stretch your arms up, you won't bump it. Now put the small shelf on the left at the height as if the picture were on it (so the molding underneath is lower than the picture, but the shelf the same height) with something tall and thin on it--like a tall vase of lavendar or just a gathered sheaf of something sans vase--like wheat or lavendar--tied with a bow. Now on the right side place the longer shelf a little lower than in the middle of the picture. Place letters on it spelling something fun--like dream or slumber, whatever, with an object like a ceramic bird, wooden rooster, whatever strikes your fancy. Just something to put the 'period' at the end of your artistic sentence. Looking at the 3-piece grouping as a whole, center that over the bed. Can you see it? Do you like it?

I say no to the shelves, unless you put them on the side walls. Yes to the picture in the middle, and then ancher it with either sconce's like these: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1435&f=3293 or mirror's like these: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1435&f=5096
or wall art like this: http://www.pier1.com/TopMenu/Products/tabid/260/Default.aspx?task=viewproduct&id=2073&urlname=round-swirl-wall-decor

Those are my ideas! good luck.

oooh, both good ideas. thanks guys!

april the problem with that is that i already HAVE the shelves and the things i want to put on them. i definitely need the shelves because i have two vases and several other things to put on them that i can't return at this point, and like i said before, i don't have space in my bedroom to put them if they're not on the walls. if i don't have the shelves, i have lots of pretty things that match my bedroom and nowhere to put them. and the wall art is very pretty, but i have a lot of iron like that in the rest of the house and don't really want it in the bedroom too. i really like the mirrors too! so. now do you have any other opinion with the shelves in play?

maybe something like this--the alternate view(the one with the buffet table.) instead of the smaller picture above, use the smaller shelf and maybe a smaller picture on the shelf. this is a hard one...

I liked your idea of having the picture set on the shelf. I wouldn't put the small shelf under, though. I would put it off to the side with a vase and flowers or a smaller picture. Maybe, if you use the two picture idea, have the pictures tell some kind of story. In our room, we have a big picture from our engagment with a smaller picture of us dating on one side and a smaller picture of us on our wedding day on the other side. They all set on a shelf.

ohohoh, decorating with someone else's stuff - so much fun!

I would place the picture off center, with the small shelf next to it, about half-way up with length of the picture, with one of your vases on it. I think the small shelf should display only one item, preferably a special item, so maybe not a vase, depending. And then the long shelf, beneath the small shelf but not centered and lower then the picture's bottom. Make sense? Can you picture it?

If you like playing in photoshop, you could make a mock wall, and place them on it, arranging and rearranging until you are happy. :-)

I would not put your big picture up so high that you can put another shelf underneath it; maybe I read that wrong, but it would definitely be to high if you did that. I would make a faux headboard with some fabric that went pretty far up the wall, and then put just the one frame on top of the fabric at about 5 feet high, centered of course. I would hang the small shelf next to your bedroom door .

I would trace the picture and the shelves on newpaper and then tape them to your wall. That way you can play with the arrangement without holes. Once you find the one you like you can hang everything up. I want to see a picture of the finished project. Good luck and maybe you can do my bedroom when you are done. :)

here's what i do - trace the size and shape of the items you want to hang on the wall onto brown paper bags. then tape them to the wall space, so that you can rearrange and mess with the placement all you want before drilling holes. then, when you have it how you want it, mark on the brown pieces where the holes should be - then drill the holes through the paper bags, so you don't have to measure one-handed the placement of holes and nails. since we tend to move more frequently than most people, I keep my bags in a file, so that I can rearrange and use in each new house. they don't take up that much space and they are a real time/stress saver - happy decorating!
