blog suicide

i don't like halloween.

i think it's probably my least favorite holiday.

i realize in admitting this, i am committing blog suicide. it seems like every blogger in the world's favorite holiday is halloween.

except for me.

people dress up in scary, gross, or slutty costumes and get candy. i'm not sure i see the fun in that. maybe i just don't care for dress ups? or maybe it's the fact that i can buy candy myself now? i remember being cookie monster in preschool, an angel in kindergarten, a mouse in third grade, and a baby every other year because i got to wear pj's to school and take a bottle full of kool-aid. one year in maryland i was a bag of jellybeans. a clear plastic garbage bag filled with colorful balloons was a hit...until i tried to sit down. nothin' doin'. made for a long school day.

when isaac was five months old i got invited to a halloween party for kids. i asked my friend who was giving the party if she was dressing up, and she said yes. my mom had made this crazy pumpkin costume for a work party lots of years ago, so i thought, why not? let's go together as matching pumpkins. i thought it was so cute. slightly embarrassing, but it's halloween, everybody looks dumb.

i get to the party first, and my friend is wearing a cowboy hat. that's it. well, no, she was wearing clothes (she wasn't naked, that's sort of how that sounded), but no other pieces of costume. she laughed and said "wow, you look so great!" slowly, other moms started arriving....and none of them was dressed up. not one of them.

i was mortified.

somehow, i talked myself into staying, stretchpants, giant costume and all....but the whole time i was feeling so stupid and just dying to get home and take off my stupid pumpkin costume.

i think that's what solidified the dislike of halloween.

do you like it? halloween i mean?

It's ok. It's definitely not my favorite holiday. I do think it is funnier now that I'm older-when I have a party to go to etc...
This years I'm going to be a 1920's flapper girl! And I wish I got more trick or treaters in my neighborhood.

You look cute as a pumpkin! and so does Isaac.

I like halloween because I get to be crafty and make (or attempt to make) my girls' costumes. If not for the crafty part, I wouldn't care much at all.

Here people go trick-or-treating before it even gets dark. And some towns don't do it on Halloween - some did it yesterday. that bugs the crap right out of me.

I don't really have any feelings on Halloween. (I don't think that it is evil, but I don't go crazy with decorations for it either.) I have no idea why we celebrate it, so maybe that's why I don't really care about it. I think it is fun for Rachel to get to dress-up and go out in public. She loves to dress-up, but I don't let her go anywhere. I've never been a fan of hard candy, so that part never mattered. I do like the parties. Really anytime to get together and chat is fun. I don't dress-up ever either.

I don't know why it would be suicide. :) I won't stop reading just cause you don't like it! I kinda don't care one way or the other about halloween. i do like to decorate for it and i like to see my kids have fun.

so sorry about the party, that is totally something that would happen to me!

I TOTALLY agree with you, Em!!!
This is one wierd holiday. You nailed it with the slutty or horrific costumes and gluttonous comsumption of candy. Seriously. I'm tired of avoiding certain houses and stores because their Halloween decor gives my son nightmares. It's all a little nasty.
Now if you'll excuse me I have a bag of Butterfinger miniatures that I was working on.

I like the decorations but don't really decorate my house. We have a party at church and all the kids trick or treat to the cars in the parking lot. That part is fun. Then we keep the lights off at home since we have already gave away all our candy. I don't have to worry about work either. The CEO has two MAJOR rules - No animals at work and no Halloween costumes.

And I can do you one better.
I don't really love Christmas.

I agree with what you said about the costumes..its always an excuse for girls to dress slutty..but I do love Halloween, not scary Halloween, but cute, fun Halloween. I love the candy and the games and parties!
I have to say, I would have been mortified if I were you too, no one likes to show up to a costume party and be the only one dressed up!Darn that ruined it for ya! But you look cute in it!

I came from Debbie's blog, I had to see who disliked Halloween, and committed blog suicide. ;)

The other mothers at the party probably were thinking, "I wish I were as cool as Emily, she is the best mother evah!"

Oh, and since you don't like Halloween, can I have your table decor?

hee-hee . . . I know it isn't yours. :)

It's okay. Not my favorite. I like creative, homemade costumes, though.

:)My kids always ask me what I am going to dress up as, and I say what I dressed up for last year...nothing. Thomas always says "A cranky dad." I guess we're not that fun. That party sounds likes one of my biggest nightmares, glad you survived it though.

You are not alone. I hate halloween. I have very minimal decorations for it and I always put them out halfheartedly.

p.s. I just read your story to Jarom through giggles and he laughed and said "Oh, that's Emily." Then he said that I remind him of you except I'm less giggly. Whatever that means. I think he was just saying that I would totally do something like that and feel really embarrassed.

Poor Emily. You were the cool mom dressing up though. You should keep doing it. Your kids would love it. Well, I say that but I don't either.

I like Halloween for the costumes and the trick-or-treating. I was thinking of writing a blog post about how much I hate the evil decorations in everyone's backyards. It suprises me how many people will fill their yard with evil looking things but not do a single decoration on Christmas.

I admit I liked it a lot more when I was single! It's not my favorite but I love giving candy out to all the cute trick-or-treaters except when some kid in high school comes by! Seriously, who does that in HS?!?!

I just re-read this post and laughed all over again. Not with you...AT you. It's pretty funny/embarrassing. I'm dying!
