Question of the Week:

What would you do if you won the lottery?
I mean the huge, powerball jackpot, $400 million lottery...

*********

First, I would give my parents and Dave's parents $10 million each.

*********

Second, I would give all of my brothers and sisters and Dave's brothers a million dollars each. They could petition for more, but that's the starting point.

*********

I would set up trusts for my boys for college and missions.

*********

I would buy my dream house. It's been on the market for over a year now and it's the perfect house. It's just down the street from my parents house and I've been in love with it for years. It has a big wraparound porch, the garage is on the side (I hate that houses these days are all garage in the front. I want to see the house, not the garage), it has lots of space and every upgrade imagineable, it's beautiful. I'll take a picture next time I'm down there so you can see how perfect this house is. I would hire a decorator and a housekeeper, too.

*********

I would buy one of the Victorian-style houses down by the water in Benicia, CA (Dave's hometown). They are so pretty and the view of the bay is amazing.

*********

I would buy cars. I want to say mini-van but Andrea will make fun of me, but I seriously would. I would buy a fun one too, like maybe a small Mercedes convertible. Red, of course.

*********

I would pay off our student loans.

*********

I would invest, invest, invest and save, save, save. I would hire a financial advisor to help me because I don't know the stock market at all, but I would insist on signing every check that ever gets written (I saw that on Oprah once, she interviewed a lady who won the lottery and that was a piece of advice Oprah gave. She said if only you have the ability to sign checks, you will always know where every penny of your money is).

*********

I would want to pay tithing, but I don't think the Church accepts tithing from lottery wins, so I guess I'd just give a hefty donation to the church. And probably BYU too.

*********

I would decorate the coolest tree to ever cross the floors of the Festival of Trees.

*********

I would set up a fund for people like Dave and I when we were starting out. We both had college degrees but were paid so piddly that we couldn't have possibly afforded a house even before the market went crazy. I would give money to people like that who just wanted a small starter home but couldn't ever get a leg up.

*********

I would travel a lot. Italy, Ireland, Scotland, England, African safari, Israel, Asia, then tropical places like the Cayman Islands, Hawaii, ....lots of traveling. And I'd buy a boat for the tropical stuff.

*********

What would you do?

JohnPaul and I talked about this about 6 months ago. When we dream we dream big. We would pay our house off and then burn it to the ground. You can sell an empty lot easier than an existing house. I found my dream home about 2 years ago in all places of Erda, Utah. It's awesome and not on the market anymore but I am sure I could pay the owners enough money they would go away! I would have a house in Florida and Maine and then travel! I want to go to Alaska and Hawaii and Italy, the Bahamas, all kinds of places and I don't want to worry about how much everything costs! Gifts to everyone I know. The church won't accept tithing on lottery money but we think we know how to donate to other areas that would be accepted. I want my own jet and pilot so that I can say - Hey, lets go have lobster in Maine and away we go. I could go on forever!

Have you ever met one of those people that have a TON of money but you'd never know it because they seem so normal? That's how I'd want to be. REALLY comfortable and able to do all the things I dream of (travel, own a beautiful home, give to family & friends, etc.), but basically still be the same person--just with nicer things and less worries!

Hi Emily. It's Ashley. I've got Cannon on my lap and I'm typing with my left hand, so pardon my pecking. I absolutely love your blog. It's so fun. I'll tell Jarom that you've got one. He loves keeping up with Jessica's so I know he'll be excited to see yours. Thanks for the sweet comments. Keep in touch! That's what I love about blogging! :)

How fun to imagine stuff like this (and to hear your list)...since I'm totally on a blogging rut hope you don't mind if I (maybe) do the same thing.

Thanks for saying you'd buy a fun car too. I would start with building my own aquarium where you could go scuba diving, and I'd make admission like $10 a person. Then I'd send Spencer to culinary school - he'd love that; seriously. I'd build a health clinic in Africa for my Dad to work, and he would die a happy man. Oh, and I'd get myself a stinkin' Luca Glider.

So you would put your siblings above your kids? (: I just thought it was funny that you mentioned your siblings before your kids' college funds. (:

those were in no particular order. if they had been, donations to the church would've been first.
