kentucky derby 134

today is the 134th kentucky derby at churchill downs.
i love the kentucky derby.
it's only about 2 minutes long, but it's so exciting!
even if i don't know anything about the horses or who might win, it's a thrill to watch.

my mom got me started. she loves horse racing.
she introduced me to dick francis books, which are always somehow about horse racing (but more steeplechase than flat race). they are so good. and set in england. who doesn't secretly wish they were english? i know i do.

some day, my mom, my sisters and i are going to the kentucky derby.
we'll wear fancy dresses and big hats.i can't wait.

encyclopedia of me - k

top row:

  • kids - i always wished for a younger brother or sister to take care of, and started baby-sitting for $1 an hour when i was ten years old. my first niece was born when i was 13 and i could not get enough of her. i've always loved kids and was so excited to have my own. motherhood does not disappoint--it's hard, to be sure, but seriously fun. my kids are a crack-up and i love having them.
bottom row:
  • kentucky derby - one of my life goals is to one day attend the kentucky derby. wear a fancy dress, a big hat, and bet on a horse. you can read previous posts about the derby here.

  • key lime pie - yum. need i say more?

  • knee - (no, those are not my legs, in case you were wondering.) my junior year of college i took the beginning ski class with my roommate jessica. i fell on our second-to-last class, right at the bottom of the hill by the lift. embarrassing, yes, but even worse was the fact that i could not get up, nor could i walk. jess drove me to the hospital for x-rays (and as i tried to walk into the ER i fell in the parking lot, so a kind citizen brought me a wheelchair), where they found nothing wrong... but an mri a few days later showed a torn acl. i was still in school so i used crutches for a few days but that was so awful i finally just started walking on it. i thought it was fine until swimming in the gulf of mexico that summer, and i somehow re-injured it. when my knee swelled to twice its normal size, my dad decided it was time to get it fixed (before i got married later that summer so his insurance would pay for it). i was so sad because my doctor told me i would still be on crutches for my wedding. he was wrong. while i couldn't quite kneel with that knee on the altar in the temple, i was thankfully crutch-free for the big day. but i do have a big scar and a knee that cracks with every step to show for it.

random thought thursday

the price on this dress is ridiculous,
but i just want it SO BAD.
it would be so comfortable and easy with some
cute wedges or t-strap sandals and a light cardigan.
pretty sure i would wear it 3 times a week.

******

school is out in 3 weeks.
i am now taking suggestions
for end-of-the-year teacher gifts.

 ******

isaac has had a hard time falling asleep lately,
so we've extended his bedtime by half an hour.
it's worked pretty well but tuesday he came home from school
and had fit after fit, refusing to do his homework, etc.
i sent him to his bed for some time to himself
and found him 10 minutes later, fast asleep.
maybe a half hour is too much?
he hasn't taken a nap since he was 2 years old.

******

who's ready for the kentucky derby?
i'm going NEXT YEAR!
woohoo!!

******

half of noah's baseball games
start at 8 pm.
i don't have isaac's schedule yet, but ugh.
the kids' bedtime is 8!

******

i made a small "gallery wall" this morning
on the wall that has been blank since we moved in.
now i think it looks dumb and want to move it
to the wall above the love seat.
do i dare make all those nail holes again?

******

i need a new printer really badly.
 i normally wouldn't care
but since i'm in charge of making the programs for church
and my printer prints 2 inch wide black lines
down both sides of the paper,
it really is a need, not a want.

******

i'm getting to be a REALLY good artist.
of stick figures, that is.

******

last night my kids wanted to earn some money
so i gave them magic erasers and set them to the walls.
now there are large white spots right at my kids' height
amidst dirty brown/black (white) above and below.
i hope the walls were already that dirty
and we didn't do that. gross.

******

incidentally,
mr. clean magic erasers
are not meant for wood.

******

 zoe is obsessed with babies.
she wants to play with her baby,
hold real babies,
look at pictures and watch videos of herself as a baby,
and says "baby" about 50 times a minute.

******

zoe's hair is also bothering her a lot
and she's constantly brushing it out of her face.
i feel a hair cut (at her own hands) is imminent.
i'm hiding ALL the scissors.

******

dave got a hefty speeding ticket
on his way to pick up a kid
for a young men's activity last night.
the things we do for our church!
good thing it's true.

random thought thursday

check out this
kentucky derby-style
wedding from snippet & ink.
such a cute idea for a girl from louisville.
(and a peony bouquet!)

******

big shout out
to my friend jenn,
for letting me use her camera
for isaac's birthday
(probably against her better judgment).
i didn't drop it,
thanks to the neck strap,
and got some really fun pictures.
thanks jenn!

******

bought a bottle of
tylenol cold for my boys yesterday.
put it in my purse to take home
(that's all i bought so i didn't use a bag)
and it somehow exploded.
tylenol cold all over my purse.
sooo not cool.

******

i
looooove
navy
blue.

******

big happenings around here lately.
birthdays,
kindergarten registrations,
and now preschool graduations.
too much change in a short time period.
i don't like change.

******

are you
doing anything
for memorial day
weekend?
i'll be chillin' at my parents pad
with my sister and my niece.
booyah.

******

can't figure out glee.
is it supposed to be a satire,
or is it serious?
liked the song at the end
(don't stop believin').
and it's set in lima, ohio
(pronounced "lime-uh"),
where my friend andrea is from.
neat.

******

have you ever messed up song lyrics?
my friend lara thought "dust on the bottle"
said "there might be a little dust on your bottom,
but don't let it fool ya, because it's your wife."
the actual words are "there might be a little dust on the bottle,
but don't let it fool ya about what's inside."

i just realized that i messed up some lyrics
in "don't stop believin'":
i always thought the words were
"hold on to the bitter end".
but it's
"hold on to that feelin'."
hi-larious.

******

what's the deal
with pants?
i'm sick of them.

******

i have just discovered
that a well-placed "booyah"
is hilarious.
i'm dying.
