not enough.

three kids has not been a big deal. two was a big deal to me. three, not so much. i'm already staying at home with kids, so that's not an adjustment. i already have mountains of laundry, so that's no biggie. i've had two babies, so i know how to roll with it when she's crying...and sometimes, i just let her cry (something i never did with my boys) because i have to get the dinner made, or i have to get isaac to school, or i have to brush noah's teeth. so three? it's not as bad as i was expecting.

three kids has been a huge deal to noah. i thought he was handling it pretty well, as i have made a conscious effort to make the transition as smooth as possible. but there are still times when he needs something, and he has to wait because i'm feeding the baby, or in the middle of a diaper change, or something along those lines. but no matter what is happening, if isaac hears zoe, he runs to her aid...which means noah gets left behind a lot. if they're in the middle of a video game, wrestling match, scream fight, it doesn't matter. if isaac hears zoe, he leaves noah. and it's breaking noah's heart...and mine.

he's acting out. not against zoe--he's incredibly sweet to her, despite the fact that it's her taking attention away from him. but he has starting bugging isaac incessantly. he has always known how to push isaac's buttons. it must be a little brother thing? but it's getting infinitely worse each day. noah is no longer isaac's favorite sibling, and noah can tell. so he follows him around, takes his stuff, hits him, sits on him, whatever it takes to get isaac to pay attention to him. and i don't know how to fix it.

when zoe was born, my mother-in-law came out to help for a week. more than help me, she helped noah in this transitory time. she played with him all day, every day, and he loved the attention. when he found out she was coming back for zoe's blessing, he was so excited (but a little nervous that he might have to give up his bed again--he didn't).

he has started having panic attacks if we leave him alone for any amount of time. usually we bathe both boys at the same time, in separate baths. when i get him in the bath and leave to get isaac's bath ready, he has a total conniption. he is feeling abandoned.

the other day he was acting up yet again, and i sent him to his bed for some alone time. he hates to be alone. so i went in with him and laid by him. as we laid there, he snuggled up to me and i started talking to him about when he was a baby. i described his first smile, and how he loved his binky, and how i could just lay him down and he would go right to sleep. i talked about when he learned to crawl how excited i was because isaac never crawled. i told him stories about noah. he laid there, very still, absolutely riveted, with a slight smile on his face. and that's when i realized: no matter how much i've done to help him right now, it's not enough. he needs more.

i don't have more. i don't know how to give him more when there is nothing more to give. i guess this is the challenge of parenthood--trying to find what your child needs and giving it to him as best you can. today dave took him on a "date", just the two of them, and i'm hoping he'll get home and be happy with that one-on-one time. but he misses isaac. he doesn't want to just go on a date with dad, he wants isaac to come. and isaac wants to stay with zoe.

i do not know how to make my offering enough. i don't know how to make isaac remember that he loves noah too. and so i hope, and i pray, and i do the best i can. and maybe dave and God can make up what i can't give.

Oh my gosh...I started getting choked up reading this. Poor little Noah. That must be really hard!

yep that's EXACTLY the hard thing about 3+ kids. it's not the baby- it's managing all of the kids' needs, and it's HARD. (btw also the reason i think we're done, it gets harder) but my advice is give what you can give and give him some time, it'll work itself out.

Oh, that's so sad. That sounds really hard. I think we're done, too, and a lot is because of how much I know I want to give to our kids and the more stretched thin I am, the worse I feel and then I worry about that seeping over into the kids/mood in the house/relationships. I want to give my all to those we have and love.

It sounds to me like you're doing great. I love that you laid down with Noah and took time with him and told him those stories. You knew just what to do!

Sounds like the boys need some "boys time" together. Maybe if you and Zoe go out for some shopping or something, the boys can hang out and bond? You'll know what to do. Mothers who care (like you do) know what to do.

i think you're doing a great job and i'm really jealous that three has been such an easy transition for you. i guess it was for me too, until lately. as lexie gets older i find it harder and harder to juggle their endless needs with my limited time. (sigh)

but, i think what you're doing sounds great. my only suggestion would be to hype up the fact that isaac and noah are "the boys." for instance, make sure you point out that their room is the "boy" room. or, that they have such cool "boy" toys just for them. this might help noah feel like he and isaac have a super cool "boy club." heck, i'm not sure that will work, but you might give it a try.

i know you'll figure it out--you're THE EMILY!!! :)

oh, so sad. this is definitely a reason I am not looking forward to 3 or more... eek. I kinda mirror everyone else's thoughts... I would also try to have alone time with each of the kids, so they feel like they're all getting individual attention. And maybe plan some special play days with Noah... he's absolutely welcome over here anytime to play (maybe isaac and noah, then they could both play together with other kids, without zoe around to keep isaac's attention... just so noah can see that isaac still loves him and he's still isaac's favorite little brother....
good luck. call me if you need anything... (I'll be home quite a bit more now... my hours have been dropped to 15 hrs a week-yay!!) ;)

I've had similar responses to your story of telling Noah about Noah as a baby. My kids love for me to tell stories about them when they were babies, how they got out of the tub and ran around naked and we couldn't catch 'em. All those fun little things they forget.

Keep doing things like that so that he feels how important he is to you. We do that for FHE sometimes--Share a funny story about each kid for everyone to laugh at.

I'm so impressed with how you're handling that. I'm glad you posted this. It's stressful, but at least you recognize what is going on...that's the first hurdle.
We're dealing with some of the same stuff, only not with the arrival of a sibling, but the arrival of a disease.
...I'm terrified about ever adding a new baby to the mix.
I'll call you for advice if we ever tackle that one.

...your boys are adorable, by the way. I love the pics of them. And Zoe, oh that sweet Zoe, she is beyond precious!!! Keep the pictures coming!

By the way, wanted to thank you for getting me in contact with your friend. She left me a comment and I plan to email her to pick her brain.
You're a sweetheart!

Poor little Noah. I wonder if Jack will be the same. . . I think you're doing more than your part in trying to make him feel loved still. Isaac will just have to take things in stride and hopefully the "newness" of a new sibling won't last forever and he'll soon be wanting to hang out with the "boys" again. (:

It's a good thing you don't have 19 kids like that Duggar family on TLC. CRAZY! Can you imagine how neglected those babies feel from their parents. But I guess they DO have lots of siblings to pay attention to them, so no biggie right?

Honestly I think what you are doing is great. He knows he's loved, and the rest will hopefully work out soon. Good luck!
