utah state fair

how was your weekend? i hope y'all did something fun. we decided to take the boys to the state fair on friday after school. i've never been to the utah state fair and always loved it in new mexico, so we headed down. the boys took the train and i picked them up at the station (i had to make a side trip--more on that later). the fair was....well, in a word, hot. extremely hot. sweat dripping down my back hot. sunburnt to a crisp hot.

and in another word? pricey. it would have saved us money to buy two ride wristbands at $21 a pop than to buy tickets for the boys to ride two rides each. my fascination with the state fair is officially over. and carnies? they're kinda creepy. no offense to any carnies out there, but really, if i want to play a game and win a prize, i'll do it. you do not need to try and guilt me into it 47,000 times as i walk down the midway aisle.

and one more thing. what kind of person pays money to see a small deformed woman? can you imagine being that woman, waiting for people to pay money just to look at you? and imagine the devastation if nobody is interested enough to pay and you sit there all day for nothing.

i didn't get very many pictures, but isaac did when we sat down to have a drink and some shade. so here is the state fair through isaac's eyes:

there were some fun aspects. the boys LOVED their rides (a helicopter flying ride, a train, a roller coaster, and the fun house) but mostly i loved the alligator. he was really cool! the wrangler seemed really nervous. not that he shouldn't be, just that i did expect more confidence from an alligator handler. but whatever. here's some cool video from our show:

and what's a state fair without a funnel cake? here is ours, along with a picture of dave's first bite of a funnel cake ever. can you believe he made it 31 years with no funnel cake?

honestly, it wasn't as good as i hoped. or maybe it was as good as could be, but i've outgrown the fried-batter-covered-in-sugar stage of my life? that would be sad.

i definitely think state fairs are over rated and over pricey. the NM state fair isn't what it was when we were younger, which is sad. i think it is best to keep our memories from when we were little.

but the funnel cake is so good! yummy.

the state fair here is in Pueblo, which i think is weird, because Pueblo isn't really that big of a city. i've never gone, and i don't think that i will.

on another side note, i saw you might be in NM for Michelle's bday party. if you were there, that would be AWESOME!, because i'll be there!

what did dave think of the funnel cake? and if you have some how outgrown fried batter-covered in sugar, please email me ASAP because i think my pants are telling me i need to outgrow that phase too.

funnel cake is one my favorite things ever - can't believe that was dave's first time trying it!

Just so David doesn't have to feel singled out, I'll have to admit that I'm a quarter century older than him, and I've never tasted funnel cake. At Farmer's Market on Thursdays there is a "deep fried everything" booth. I avoid it. I mean really, deep fried asparagas? But next time I'll try the funnel cake.
