question of the week:

where do you want to retire?
******

this is a long way off, i know. but we've been paying pretty close attention to dave's 401(k) lately as it has lost more than 20% of our retirement savings in the last few months, and my mind is on retirement. i think realistically we'll probably want to retire where we lived, so that we're close to our family and friends that we've made during our lives together. but what i really want is to live somewhere really cool, at least for a little while. i probably won't want the same things when i'm 65, but for now, i'd love to live somewhere overseas. i don't imagine that we'll travel much (or at all) while we're still young, so i would love the chance to just leave everything behind and live in italy for a while.

we could study the language, live like locals, and really see the other side of the world. we could even work a little and take long weekends and ride the trains all over the country. we could stay for six months or a year, and then head somewhere new, like london or paris, or even ireland. my friend lynette is having some amazing experiences overseas, first in chile and now in singapore. i have another friend john who is currently living in australia. i think those experiences will be so invaluable to them and their kids, and i would love to be able to provide that for my kids--not just a visit, but a whole new way of life. i find myself longing for this every time i talk to lynette (online) or read a post about something new she's doing. i know i can't do it, at least for now, so i'm dreaming about what we can do together when we're old and gray. assuming we still want to.

I want to retire in SLC, but I want to spend some time living in New Zealand and Brisbane. Italy looks beautiful. I hope you make it.

I want to retire in La Luz, NM, on my in-laws property - they are in the process of creating an organic you-pick orchard, getting layer chicks, and learning about gardening to feed themselves - all stuff I want to do WITH THEM, and continue on once they are gone. So for my retirement, I guess I visualize not really NOT working, but working on stuff I love and that is important to me, on my own schedule. :-) That is a big reason why we want to move back to NM - to start living the life we dream about.

I would love to live overseas, too; Ireland, Italy, Australia, New Zealand. Hubby and I are semi-retired so we may try a house-swap first, perhaps as soon as next year!

we have talked about this quite a bit. We want someplace warm but not deathly hot and no snow and close to family. I don't know if there is such a place.

If we ever get to retire, I think I would just want to be somewhere that is home, and be able to have my family around me.

On a beach. Not sure which one yet. Preferable one that doesn't get a tsunami.
