the greatest guy i know

my dad and noah, thanksgiving 2007

My dad's the biggest guy, and my dad's the strongest guy,
and my dad's the nicest guy of any guy in town.
He can do anything, he'll fix your bike, or fly a kite
'cause my dad, my dad's the greatest guy around.
He can throw a ball so high you think it's gonna break the sky;
he knows the name of every kind of jet--vroom!
He can add up any sum, he always has money for bubblegum
I haven't figured how he does it yet, but
my dad's the smartest guy, and my dad's the bravest guy
and my dad's the neatest guy, it's positively so!
Maybe I'll introduce you, then you'll know that it's the truth
that my dad my dad's the greatest guy you know.

so that song very accurately describes my dad. all except for maybe the "biggest" part. i used to tell my friends he was 10 feet tall and could beat up their dads...but, well, at a whopping 130 pounds, he probably couldn't. but the rest is all true!

my dad came up on thursday. my mom's been in st. george with my sister ellen, helping take care of her new baby eliza. so i invited my dad up for dinner on thursday. he came up early (11:00 am) and took me and the boys to lunch, where we talked about some really neat experiences he had in his life. then we came back home and he got to work. he fixed our new garbage disposal that's been leaking for a few months (gross); he put on a new showerhead in our bathroom so i can actually shower without pain (the old one STUNG); he installed the shelf on the wall above my bed that i've been meaning to do since last october; he hung my phone on the wall (you know, so it doesn't have to sit on the counter...i've been trying to figure that one out for a year but couldn't get it on there because of our dsl filter...but dad found a way. he always does)....he just was my dad, and it was so nice to have him around for a day. he stayed for dinner and helped feed the kids since dave had class that night. it was one of the best days i've had in a while. probably not my dad's best day, but for me, it was just nice having him around again. and i'm not gonna lie, it was heaven to get a few projects completed. noah even refused to take a nap that day because he was too excited to have grandpa at his house. isaac and noah both "helped" him with the garbage disposal and a few other things, plus he just played with them in general. i wish each and every one of you could know my dad. he is simply the coolest person ever. i got so lucky when i got to be part of his family. my dad really is the greatest guy i know.

p.s. last night he found his mission letters that he thought were lost forever! hurray!

Your dad is pretty awesome. My mom was SO happy to have found his letters for him. She was up late talking about it all night thursday, and kept bringing it up on friday. She was pretty thrilled.

What a guy, I love crossing projects off my list. And it usually takes the help of somebody else to get them done.

Kelly, I hear you on that. I went to your blog and read your sweet posts. Your dad sounds like a great person, too. My Dad died about a month after yours--it's really difficult, isn't it. I think writing about it helps. It's bittersweet to read posts like this. I agree--cherish every moment. Your dad sounds great, Emily. How neat that you get to visit with him like that, too!

Kelly and Stacy, thanks for your comments. I'm sorry if I was insensitive, I really wasn't trying to be! For both of you, I have loved reading your posts about your dads. I think it's so nice to hear about these wonderful men in our lives.

Oh Emily, not at all! You're not insensitive at all. Please don't worry. It's a beautiful post. Our feelings when reading it are our own, but have nothing to do with your intent. It may be bittersweet for us but that doesn't make you insensitive at all!! I love to read posts like this. I think Dads are great! And I think it's wonderful that you're cherishing yours. Post away, my friend!
