how do you sleep?
******
with covers or without?
do you have your own blankets or do you share with your spouse?
which side of the bed do you sleep on?
do you lay on your spouse like on tv or do you need your own space?
last night dave and i went to bed at the same time for the first time in...oh, seven years or so. it was weird. we have a king size bed, and i generally like my space when i sleep, but even having him there while i was falling asleep made me feel like a newlywed again--kind of nervous, like i might snore and wake him up, and i didn't want to move excessively because i didn't want to bother him. it just wasn't normal. so i got to thinking about sleep. my sister-in-law holly has this whole ordeal about sleep, and while i'm not quite like that, i do have my preferences.
if you're standing at the foot of the bed facing it, i sleep on the right side. has to be the right side. i like coldness on my sheets--no electric blankets for me--and have a hard time sleeping if it's too warm in the house. we use our ceiling fan even in the winter. we use a fitted sheet, flat sheet, and a blanket that we share. i know some people use just blankets so they can each have their own. that would drive me nuts. falling asleep is sometimes hard for me, so i have a routine. i start out on my right side with my right arm above my head. this is also why i get ginormous holes in my jammies shirts on the right side. after a while i move to my stomach, then go back to the right, then to the left, where i usually fall asleep. i snore. loudly. it's not my fault, and i can't help it, but i hate it. i can't sleep if the closet doors are open. must be a monster thing. i also don't like clutter in my bedroom and have a hard time falling asleep if there are piles of paper on the dresser or computer desk.
sometimes i wonder if people actually sleep like they do on tv, where they lay on their husband/wife. i don't think i could ever fall asleep like that. it's just too weird.

No top sheets ever. They get all twisted and crazy!
We have our ceiling fan on all winter as well. I have have HAVE to sleep with circulating air.
I need white noise to sleep so I usually have to wait for Matt to fall asleep first and then I can fall asleep to his snores. I asked if I could buy a white nosie maker and he said a big "NO".
And I always sleep with my feet outside of the covers.
I just have to say, I Love the ideas you come up with!
I sleep with covers. I have a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, and a down comforter. Sometims in the winter I'll use a quilt, but rarely.
If you are looking at the bed, like you I sleep on the right. I have a queen size bed, and hardly ever do I go all over it. I almost always stay on "my side" of the bed.
I can't imagine actually falling asleep ontop of my spouse/boyfriend. Through my relationship with Aaron I learned I'm not one for cuddling really. And Aaron was-a cuddler. He liked going to sleep touching me-I finally got used to his hand being at the small of my back. But that was about it. When we would sleep together we shared our covers.
As for a routine, I don't really have one. I have never been the type of person to fall asleep easily, or right away. I ususally toss and turn for a little bit, and I ususally sleep on my stomach. I do have to fall asleep with the TV on, and I put it on sleep-usually for about 30 to 40 minutes. The TV itself is on mute, and usually I know I had a good nights sleep if I didn't hear the TV turn off.
Good question Emily. We have separate covers. We tried sharing for about 3 weeks after we got married but after sleeping by myself for 175 years it was hard for me to share covers and I stole them every night. So JohnPaul finally grabbed his own quilt and it's been that way ever since. We have a California King Waterbed with a bottom sheet – no top sheet and then we each have our own quilts. I am on the right - JohnPaul on the left. I start out sleeping on my stomach and turn only when I wake up because my back hurts. We sleep in the basement so our room is much colder than the rest of the house which we love. Fan in the summer but not during the winter. We cuddle for about 3 minutes in the winter before one of us gets hot. Then it's to our respective sides of the bed. I snore loudly also and JohnPaul says that it is comforting - he knows where I am when he hears it.
as a side note - your mom made us a quilt for a wedding present and that was my quilt until about 3 months ago when it totally fell apart.
Haha...funny you should ask! Scott would probably swear that I would WANT to be one of those people that lays on their significant other if he would let me...but I need my space too! If you are facing the bed...then I sleep on the left side. I almost ALWAYS start on my back with my blanket wrapped up around my face (hence the make-up smears on the top of my blanket. I know...gross). I guess you could say that I always start on the left side then somehow make it over to the middle. Sometimes I will wake up and poor Scott will be snuggling with the edge of the bed. I SOMETIMES snoor too and have been known to talk in my sleep. I have even been having a conversation with Scott (while awake, but very tired) and start falling asleep while we are talking, then start dreaming a totally different conversation...saying wierd things to him. I HAVE to have the fan on.I used to be a huge blanket person, and love to have the top sheet plus a couple extra blankets, but Scott will not have it. For awhile, he was sleeping on top of the top sheet, and me underneath, but I found it very difficult to move, and felt trapped. So, now we do not use a top sheet. OK...now that my novel is over...that is how I sleep. All over the place.
I sleep on the right side if you are facing the bed. We sleep on a Full... been this way since we got married. we have a fitted sheet a top sheet and a quilt or comforter on top. when it gets cold we usually add a fleece blanket in between the top sheet and the quilt. Our room never gets warm and there is always a draft. Joseph loves his covers up to his neck. I put a foot out if I get too warm... We share covers. I don't think I would like separate covers... we like our space but we also like to cuddle. it just depends on the day. I usually fall asleep on my left side... also if Joseph is not home and I am sleeping by myself, I always sleep on his side...
I sleep on the right side. I always start cuddling my husband. Its really weird if he's not home or staying up late. Then we we are starting to doze off I roll to my left side. I have to have a big fluffy pillow under my head and I use a big body pillow between my legs and I hug it (its the cuddling thing I guess). I started doing that when I was pregnant and I can't go back. I've always like at least 2 pillows though. We share a sheet and blanket, although Ryan often kicks off just the sheet. weirdo. We also use a ceiling fan most of the time. I'm like my mom, I like circulating air.
lately, it seems like I haven't much (sleep that is). CJ snores too and while that hasn't bugged me in the past, it is starting to drive me crazy. I even bought him some "breathe right" strips for his nose, but they didn't work so if anyone has any other ideas for me, let me know! I sleep on the left side (I used to be on the right but when we moved, the left side was closer to the door and the new baby) and we have a flat sheet, fitted sheet and our comforter. Fan is usually on. How do you come up with these questions?
it was just on my mind last night is all.
I sleep on the right side, and with only a blanket. I remember doing that as a kid, I HATED the top sheet I'd get tangled in it. I toss and turn a lot. I'm an insomniac I think. No matter what I'm sleeping on I never actually sleep comfortably, I can sleep sitting up and that's usually more comfortable. Pretty weird? I think so too. Either way though, I always have to have a blanket on me even if it's Warm, it's a comfort thing I think.
Fun question. When we were first married we would always cuddle going to sleep. It never bothered us, however that ended after a couple years (or maybe a year or less). We always slept with our feet touching or with his leg over mine until just about a year ago when we got a king size bed. I tell people not to get a king size bed because it's too big and they will never see their husband anymore.
I force jared to use sheets which he hates but I think sheets are the one of the greatest inventions ever so there's no budging on that. and there's definitely no cuddling, it's not unknown for one or the other of us to throw an elbow, or knee if our space is invaded.
hi-larious, ellen.
with my eyes closed! you?
Wow, I'm learning interesting things in this thread.
We go to bed at the same time.
We use sheets and blankets.
We heat up our beds so that when we get in, it's all cozy and warm (I don't like cold!). I sleep with the electric blanket on all night.
I've not ever thought to sleep with a ceiling fan on in the cold! Interesting thought, though, on circulating air.
We have a Queen-sized bed.
I love flannel sheets in the winter. Thin, thin, thin ones in the summer.
Snoring is a sound that seriously drives me crazy with irritability. Not sure why, but the sound drives me nuts! Even when I'm totally awake and someone is napping.
We totally snuggle and talk for a while and then we kiss, say goodnight, and roll to opposite sides, facing away from each other.
I sleep on the right side of the bed when you're standing at the foot of the bed facing the bed.
I'm totally into sleeping in sleep cycles -- 1.5 hour increments. My freshman roommate in college got me hooked on this and it totally works for helping me not feel exhausted. So I usually sleep for either 6 or 7.5 hours. Sometimes, but very rarely, 9. Usually 7.5 hours.
I sleep on the left half of the bed, on my right side - back to Spencer, with a contoured pillow under my head and often a pillow in between my knees.
Oh yes, contoured pillow. Very sensitive, long neck . . .
i lay down on my back, outside of the covers, and within about 30 seconds am sleeping soundly (and snoring of course - it's the larson curse).
my wife? yeah, she does have an ordeal but i'm used to it!

What a funny comment thread!
I also sleep with the fan on- even through the winter. I'd rather my room be cool and have to use an extra blanket. We use a top sheet, tucked in on my side and loose on john's, but I usually kick it off anyway... I always have to sleep on the left side of the bed and it usually takes me 30 minutes to an hour to fall asleep on any given night. I wish this was different, but I don't know how to change!
Jenn, maybe try the right side of the bed? It seems to be a popular side for women! :P
I sleep on the left side. I'm like Ellen--if Sean is in my space-I push him away. I have to go to sleep before Sean because he snores. I elbow him if his snoring wakes me up! In the summer we sleep with just the sheets, in the winter we sleep with the sheets and comforter. Ceiling fan is always on of course!
If you're facing the bed, I sleep on the right. I sleep on the side that's closest to the door because heaven forbid Aaron get up with the kids! ;-) We have a fitted sheet and top sheet, a warm fuzzy blanket, and a quilt. In the spring and summer, we don't have the warm fuzzy blanket. We sleep with the fan on in the spring/summmer, but Aaron gets too cold if we have it on in the fall/winter. We sometimes cuddle to begin with, but it's rare. I usually spoon him after I get back into bed after my middle of the night bathroom break. He ALWAYS falls asleep first, but he claims that he has to have my hand on his back (usually tickling him) for him to fall asleep. It drives me CRAZY! Seriously, you're a big boy, put yourself to sleep! UUGGHH! ;-) I sleep on my stomach usually (facing the door so I don't have to breathe in Aaron's morning breath), but I move a lot during the night. That's me in a nutshell!
In summer no!!! Winter YES!!!!!!1
