our church believes in the Bible. we believe that moses received the ten commandments from God. we follow those commandments today. they are not suggestions--they are commands from God, and we keep those commandments to the best of our ability.the fourth commandment is found in Exodus 20:8-11:
8 Remember the asabbath day, to keep it bholy.10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy astranger that is within thy gates:
something that sets us as mormons apart is our adherence to this commandment. i'm not saying only mormons keep this commandment, but that the majority of us try our best to keep the sabbath day as a holy day. we reserve the sabbath day (sunday) as a day of worship. we attend our church meetings and do other visits. we visit the sick. we visit family, where we play games and talk and have fun together. we read scriptures and other good books. we don't shop or go to movies, we don't go out to eat, we don't go skiing or boating, or participate in sports on sundays. we rest.
i have always been a major procrastinator, and it was no different when it came to homework in high school. i would put it off and put it off and then sunday evenings i would have loads of homework to do and i would feel frustrated and mad at myself for not getting it done earlier. when i started college, i knew i was going to need all the help i could get, and so i decided not to do homework on sundays at all, that i would get my work done in the other six days of the week, and reserve sunday for rest and worship. i didn't always succeed, especially during midterms or especially busy class loads, but for the most part, i didn't do homework on sundays. it was such a good feeling! i didn't feel sick to my stomach all day sunday, knowing what work lay ahead of me.
i once tried to do a load of laundry at my parents house on a sunday. my mom said i couldn't, and when i asked why, she said, pointing to the washer, "this is my maidservant" and pointing to the dryer, "this is my manservant, and they don't work on sundays." except on emergencies (like when kids are throwing up or something like that), i don't do laundry on sundays. i reserve saturday as my day to clean house and get ready for sunday so we can rest and relax and not worry about the things around the house that need to get done.
i work a job that allows me to get my hours in whenever i have time, and whenever i can. i choose not to do this work on sunday. i know some people have jobs that require it (i did when i worked in restaurants) and other people like doctors and nurses who have to as well. but this job doesn't require it, and so i made the commitment not to work on sundays. last night i was getting ready to submit my timecard, when i realized i still had an hour and a half of work i needed to get done. i looked at the clock--it was 10:30 pm. i had exactly enough time to get my work done before the sabbath day, and so i got to work.
i think when we make commitments to keep the commandments, we are blessed. our families are blessed. and Heavenly Father provides a way for us to keep those commandments. i am far from perfect in keeping this commandment, but i do my best, and i'm blessed for my efforts.

Hi Emily! I came across your blog when reading April's recently... I enjoy your posts! And, your family is beautiful! :-)
I remember in middle school asking you if you wanted to go to a movie on a Sunday and you said no. I don't remember it being a big deal or wondering why. But I definitely agree-the rest is a great thing. And plus I feel so accomplished when I have nothing to do on a Sunday-specifically cleaning!
