random thought thursday

i was sitting at the table today
and i leaned over to grab something i dropped,
when out of nowhere a chair came out
and slammed into my forehead.
okay, so the chair was sitting next to me the whole time,
i just wasn't paying attention i guess.
it was one of those moments
that you want to burst out laughing
but you can't
because it hurts so bad.
how in the world did i not notice that chair?
i still have a headache
and i will undoubtedly
have a bruise tomorrow.
stupid chair.

******

part of my sister sara's ceiling
collapsed into their house
from hurricane ike.
scary.

******

three lightbulbs in my light
above the kitchen table
burned out in one week.
the other two are still burning strong.
i think that's weird.

******

i read
the other boleyn girl

this week.
i did NOT like it.
well, i did a little bit,
but not until i was finished with it.

******

this is dave's ex-girlfriend fenna
on her 21st birthday.
they broke up
over grape juice.

Interesting.

I would have thought they broke up over her name being FENNA.

Weirdness.

sorry to hear that you didn't like TOBG - I read your review and wish we could sit and chat, since I loved it and would totally dig talking about it. as a history major who loves English history, perhaps I take certain understandings for granted - ya, thigns were messed up back then as compared to now (IE: girls were married off at 12/13, miscarriages and birth abnormalities were blamed on witchcraft, the king of England married eight women all in the hopes of a male heir...the list goes on and on and that's just a peek!), but you have to keep that in mind when reading historical fiction - we've come a long way as a race, yet there are still things wrong with our society, too.

Oh, and with regards to Elizabeth becoming queen when Anne was so controversial - ya, it's one of England's greatest historical controversies. After all, Henry VIII married eight different women, not counting all the children he fathered out of wedlock - when he died, the crown was up for grabs and everyone wanted their own shot at it. Elizabeth was one of the greatest monarchs in all of English history, not only for her ability to run a country but also because she knew where she came from and how high the stakes were.

In other words, don't give up on history or the history/people behind TOBG - I always found that after talking out my beefs with a book with someone, it helped my overall opinion of it, even if I still didn't like it.

Oh, and in your review of the book, you didn't mention anything about Mary's relationship with William Stratford - I LOVED him and what he did for her, didn't you?!

good eye Christina! I didn't notice it was the old apartment at first but now that you mention it I am having tons of great memories!! And I'm pretty sure I have heard the grape juice story before-I just can't remember!?

Can I be Natlie's friend, too? I love talking books and I love literature and I love studying that part of history (and lots of other parts, too). And I love the movie, too--visually stunning!

Now, remind us about the grape juice.

yes natalie, I did love william, I forgot to mention him. He was so sweet and I liked Mary a TON better after she married him. I also liked how much she loved/missed her children. Nobody else seemed to care about the kids at all, but I was glad she did.

I think the grape juice story deserves its own post. On its way...

That is awesome about the grape juice!! Did he make that cake for her??? Gosh, Scott never made me any birthday cakes or nothin!! :) DId they break up on her 21st birthday because Dave gave her grape juice instead of soda??

Sorry about your head. Is it better yet? So you didn't like the book The Other Boleyn Girl, huh? I haven't read it. Did you see the movie? I have it on hold at the library and I think I'm down to about #180 in line. . . I wonder if it'll be worth the wait. Is Fenna short for something?

Emily said...

I did see the movie and I did not like it. My mom has it, you could probably borrow it rather than wait for the library copy!

I can NOT believe you posted a picture of Dave's ex on your blog- and agree on TOBG that book was trash and anyone who had the misfortune of living in that time deserves our deepest sympathies.

Emily said...

how come? is it mean? i wasn't trying to be mean, i think she's very cute.

I'm one of the few that have actually met Fenna. She worked in the MTC while I was there and she was not impressed at all that I was Dave's brother. I remember thinking eternity is a long time and I'm not ready to let Dave go to this one. Thank goodness for grape juice. I'm sure she's a lovely gal and all just not Foley material.

Foltron is quickly becoming one of my favorite blog commenters. :) Don't hide your feelings, Greg!
