question of the week:

what are your favorite summer memories?
******

my cousin diane came up with this one when i asked for help with questions of the week. as i was thinking about it this morning, a vague but awesome memory came to my mind. it's nothing great, just a good memory for me. and i don't know if it's a collection of memories or one specific memory, but i know i was young. i was probably between 3 and 5 years old. my family lived in a cul-de-sac at the bottom of a pretty big hill, and we would take skateboards, big wheels, the green machine, anything with wheels really, to the top of the hill and ride down as fast as we could. my dad was outside working on the old buick, and it was still light outside, although i knew it was late, past my bedtime. everyone was outside except for mom, and we were taking turns going down on the skateboard (it was one of those super skinny ones, i have no idea how we fit on those things). ellen and i went together and halfway down crashed into the rocks on the right side of the sidewalk. instead of grass like most people have between the street and sidewalk, everyone in new mexico had rocks. we weren't hurt and kept going down, then i took my bigwheel up and went down a few times. i rode onto the grass and turned my big wheel over and made ice cream (did you ever do that? I would spin the wheels around and around while my bike was upsidedown and for some reason called it "making ice cream"). and that's really it. nothing earth shattering, just the feeling of getting to stay up past my bedtime, the older kids actually playing with me, being out late and it was still warm outside. you'd think i'd have funner summer memories, but, well, this was the one i thought of.

I used to deliver the paper and it had to be at the customers door by 6:30 am every week day. I was always an early riser so it wasn't very hard for me. We lived only a block from a river and every once in a while I would take my sister with me, deliver all the papers super early and then we would go watch the sunrise... I think that's one of my favorite summertime memories!

I think mine would just have to be living in the swimming pool. Most of the houses we lived in growing up had pools in the backyard and I would pretty much eat, sleep, and breath pool water. I would invite friends over the second I was allowed to and we would spend as much time as possible baking in the sun and swimming and maing up water games. I still love the smell of wet cement because it reminds me of the smell of the side of the pool where I would hang on when I needed to catch my breath from playing and swimming so hard. great times.

Mine would be sleeping in until mom or dad got Delos up to go mow the lawn and he would pound on my window every time he went around the yard. Nothing better than waking up at like 10 am to the sounds of a lawnmower and a very annoying brother.

I LIVED at the pool when I was younger and I loved it. Then, I became a lifeguard and I lived at the pool but I hated it. I always had a nice tan though.

Mine would be spending the summers with my cousin's. We always went to some sort of "Camp". One summer we went to High Point, another we went to YMCA. And swimming. I love swimming. In fact I've been swimming more this year than any recent year in the past, and everytime I go swimming outdoors in the summer time it reminds me of being at the Cornado Club with my cousins. My cousin Nikki and I used to have this "Routine" in the water doing summer salts in the water, it was lots of fun.

BBQs. With Portuguese people, it's all about the food.
