margot was my visiting teaching companion in my first married ward. i didn't know what to think of her at first, because she had a .....way about her. sort of an...innocent, sweet, but extremely intelligent and talented way...sort of intimidating but way too sweet to actual be trying to intimidate you. i liked her, but i also thought she might hate me a little. then somehow we became friends. we invited a new girl we were visiting to her house for fondue one night, but she canceled at the last minute. so she called and asked us to come anyway, and to please bring a salad.
i ran to the store, bought a bag of pre-shredded lettuce, a bottle of ranch, and called it good. we get to their house and they have music playing, table is set to the 9's, and i feel like a major dope. she serruptitiously grabbed a nice bowl and bottle of raspberry vinaigrette to go with my "salad" and we had fondue...one of the yummiest things i'd ever had. we had a fun conversation and laughed a lot and i immediately wanted to be her best friend.
best friend didn't happen, but i did feel like we were friends. she was an art major and dave and i went to her final show before she graduated, and i was totally impressed. we went for walks sometimes together, and for the first (and last) time i liked visiting teaching.
i lost touch with margot after she and her husband moved, but we still send each other christmas cards. i even called her once to get her fondue recipe...it took a bit of sleuthing to find her number, but i did it, super sleuth that i am. after catching up for a few minutes, i asked for her recipe. she paused for a minute and said,
"well, i'm glad you liked our recipe enough to get back in touch with us."i could tell i'd hurt her feelings. i felt like a major jerk. but i really wanted that recipe.
back to the story. one day she stopped by my house, because she was locked out. we hung out for a while, and then i had an idea. what if we tried to jimmy the lock with a credit card?
"can you really do that?" she asked.
"of course. it happens in movies all the time."
so off we headed, me with credit card in hand. i had an image of macgyver in my head the whole time, thinking if this didn't work, maybe i could rig a battery and fire cracker into a small bomb and blow the door off the hinges.we get to her house. i walk up to the door. i slide the credit card in but it doesn't look like it's going to work. margot takes a try. it's not going to happen. i'm so disappointed. i really wanted this to work. i take a look at her door, i take a look at that credit card, and i gave it one more go.
and i did it. the lock slid open, and she was in.
macgyver's got nothing on me.

I tried this once and broke my card!! What is the secret?
I used this trick on the 5th Avenue condos all the time--not the best locks.
I once opened Carly's door using a bobby-pin. I guess watching tv isn't a waste of time.
i think dad is the true macgyver

The first year we were married I accidently locked JohnPaul out of the house one morning and I left for work. About 20 minutes after I left he called and he had take spare phone parts and built enough of a phone and hooked into the phone box in the back yard to call me and tell me to come home and let him in the house. He said later that he said to himself " What would MacGyver do and did it! So - are you posting the fondue recipe?
Wow. I can't beleive that credit card trick worked!
you shoulda been here when i got locked out in my backyard! or when Sean got locked out and had to climb through the attic in the garage to the inside of the house to get in. we really could've used your skills then sista!
I have to agree with James about dad being the true Macgyver but maybe you inherited some of it??
