quite a stretch

a few years ago i was nursing isaac when i heard some ungodly sounds coming from the family room. dave came running in with a panicked look on his face. i laid isaac down on the floor and asked dave what was happening--he was choking. seriously, truly, not breathing kind of choking. he had tried to swallow a pill and it got stuck. just as i was about to call 911 it went down and he could breathe. it was terrifying. after teaching me the heimlich for someone bigger than me, we made a call to a gastrointerologist to scope his esophagus because he'd been having trouble getting food down, and i had a cousin who had to have his esophagus stretched every now and then. dr. desautels, who (whom?) i really like, stretched it, but it was so small in diameter that it ripped, and dave couldn't eat meat for 2 months (he actually lost quite a bit of weight during that time....makes you think, eh?). dr. d said his was one of the smallest he'd ever seen and he wasn't sure how he had been swallowing at all. cut to almost 4 years later, and dave has been choking again. not as bad as before, but it takes him almost an hour to eat his food because he has to take tiny bites and chew forever. so we took him back to have it done again yesterday...only it was so small the doc couldn't even get the scope down, let alone the balloon that stretches it out. and the scope is about half the size of a pinky finger. he said a normal esophagus is about the size of a big marshmallow. dave's is about the size of a tiny marshmallow or maybe smaller. again, he said "i don't know how you've been managing as well as you have."

he was diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis, probably caused by allergies and asthma, and is now on a steroid and an acid blocker to see if they can reduce the swelling and get it big enough for a scope to go down and stretch it out a little. the risk is high for another tear when they stretch it out...poor guy.

what's weird is my brothers both have the same symptoms of this, although they haven't been diagnosed with ee, and i've been having some problems swallowing lately too...though nothing like dave. the doc said they rarely saw this 5 years ago but it's coming increasingly more common, probably because of something environmental or something in food. it's hard to pinpoint the allergen that's causing it because we eat so much stuff. red meat alone has over 1,000 different things in it (chemicals? can't remember) so finding out what allergy is causing it is hard.

in the meantime, the steroid should help reduce the inflammation (and i imagine won't hurt his daily workouts) and no meat--flaky fish is okay though. so send your fish recipes my way.

Oh goodness! Poor Dave!
I have never heard of this, but not being able to eat is about the worst affliction I can think of.

We'll be praying that the meds work and he can soon get the stretch he needs.

I wish I could help, but...I hate fish.

Whoa! That's a small esophagus - I have a wonderful clam chowder recipe it you want it. I would eat fish 3 or 4 days a week but JohnPaul doesn't like fish. Mostly all I have ever done with it is grill it or bake it. Not a lot of help am I?

Dave, that sounds awful. Hopefully the medications can get you to a place where they can help you soon.

With all of the hormones, antibiotics, food additives, etc. they're putting in commercially grown food these days it's no wonder so many people are developing allergy-related problems. As for fish, given Dave's issues I'd stick to the moist fishes (like salmon) as opposed to the meatier ones (like halibut or swordfish). Plus those have more of the omega-3s for heart health. We love salmon on the grill, especially with a little teriyaki glaze at the end. Grill it on aluminum foil to keep the mess down.

I'm sure we have some other fish recipes we can send to you.

Greg has choking issues every now and again, but it's mostly with pills, (which he avoides at all costs), or with tough meat. I don't think that it's nearly as bad as Dave's. I hate it when it happens because there's nothing I can do to help! When it gets stuck he can still breathe though. Wierd. I wonder if it's more genetic or environmental, because don't other Foley boys have issues with this?

p.s. We buy the salmon at Cosco that is individually packaged. It's really yummy and we've never had any skin or bone issues. (I'm really paranoid about those!) We usually just bake or grill it with lemon pepper, but recently we threw it in a teriyaki marinade and then made stir-fry out of it. Yum. Also, I love to serve it with couscous! Hmm...maybe that's what we'll have for dinner tonight?

Oh my gosh! That's crazy! I've never heard of such a thing!

Ok, now you have no excuse! Make my stuffed shells--they're meatless and yummy!

Wild!!! I guess that explains why it took him an hour to eat a hamburger at the Keeler's house. I was wondering about that. So, does he have a liquid diet? How often does he have to go to the doctors to get it stretched? Where is dr. D? haha

Dr. D is in Sandy. And yes, it does take him a long time to eat, hilarious that you noticed Tori!! No, not a liquid diet since it didn't get stretched, just a CAREFUL one.

Jess, we buy that same salmon, I think it tastes yummy and it's so easy since it's wrapped that way. We bake it with lemon pepper too, weird.

Yeah, I totally have the same thing. I have had it since I was little but only when I was a teenager did I have to start getting my throat stretched. I'm supposed to be on acid reduction meds, but I couldn't while preggo and nursing. Interesting. It runs in my family. All the women on my moms side have it. Yuck!

It takes me forever to eat too. I have to remember to take small bites and chew really thoroghly. It's super annoying. Luckily, the stretching procedure has never ruptured my esophagus. :(

Poor Dave. Doug lucked out on this one and has no issues with this. However, I HATE swallowing pills like Greg. I still try to get liquid antibiotics if I can (so embarrassing to ask for). I know Vivian suffers from the same thing as Dave so I wonder if it's genetics and food additives combined or something. I feel so bad for them!

Ugh, that sounds horrible and annoying! Poor Dave!

I love fish. Use AllRecipes.com for a great place to get ideas. You can even tell them what ingredients you want and which ones you don't want and it'll tell you recipe matches. I'm sure we have fish recipes we can send you. Soup, too.

Oh my goodness, that sounds terrible! I'm glad you have a good doc.
Strange thing is, John's mom has the same thing (I didn't believe her at first- I'd just never heard of such a thing).
Crazy!
