i took humanities classes in college. i never got it. just ask my brother james. we took humanities 101 together and i could not get that class. when we did architecture? forget it. what is the difference between romanesque and baroque? no idea. our teacher would show us pictures and they all looked exactly the same, and the class would be identifying them left and right as different eras and different classifications. whatever. i just don't have an eye for art. okay the differences were less obvious than these examples i have here (do you know which is which?), i promise. although, this is the same class where the teacher would show slides of the art we would have to identify for our tests and the class would yell out the artist. when the teacher showed "the scream" by munch i yelled "MUNCH!" phonetically (as a joke). i got several snorts of derision, laughs of incredulity, and surprised stares after that one. i guess i'm not cut out for humanities.
i do appreciate really pretty art, like monet or renoir, or someone who can paint a person and it actually looks like a photograph? amazing. but modern art...it's just weird. and people who can stand back and stare at a painting for more than 10 seconds? i don't understand you. i think you're neat and sophisticated and smart, but i do not understand what you're looking at. it's a picture. neat. move on. that's the way i think, anyway. i had a friend in my married student ward who majored in art and when she did her final show dave and i went to check it out, and i did spend a bit more time looking (to be polite) and noticed details i wouldn't have noticed on a first glance. but still, it wasn't more than 30 seconds max. i do, however love going to art galleries and looking at art, and my dream is to one day go to italy so i can see the works of da vinci and michelangelo and all those other ninja turtles.
in that vein, i've never been a picasso fan. he just doesn't make sense to me. but today i came across this drawing he made, called "rooster." obviously.
isn't it awesome? i'm pretty sure i could've done it myself , but i still think it's neat. i've never seen it before. when i think picasso i think noses where ears should be and eyes where knees should be, so i didn't expect to actually see a rooster when i saw the title. now i want to buy it and frame it and then theme my kitchen around it.
rooster. how about that. maybe i do appreciate modern art.
this is where you art aficionados comment and tell me that picasso is not modern, he's cubist. whatever. i call weird art "modern."

You must be making a ton of money if you're going to buy a picasso and put it in the kitchen! I agree 110%- I don't get most art but I know what I like. I like the dogs playing poker on velvet! That's art! :)
um, i wouldn't buy the original, just a print!
when I took the kids to the houston art museum last summer, I thought that I should visit it more often because I enjoy looking at art (for like an hour or two). I just heard about a new exhibit there so maybe I'll try to talk CJ into a date there. When we were looking at religious art, Hannah asked if we could leave because she thought all the painting were "scary" and they were!
Umm, well. I did graduate in art history, so maybe I'm biased, but art becomes a lot more interesting when you know the story behind the art, the methods used, if the methods were new, etc. Oh and it's baroque and romanesque - because of the arches :) That said I feel asleep during more slide shows in the HFAC than I want to admit to.
hi-larious, good one. I also like that print, you should get it. My first thought when you said picasso was modern was "picasso was cubist." can't stop laughing, and I am definitely not an art aficionado.
I'm with you. I don't really get "modern" art. :-)
I love art, but am a bit of a retard when it comes to it. There is one by Van Gogh I think it's called the purple room. I think that it would be so cool to have a real room modeled after that someday. You should look uop that picture. Simple and stunning.
I don't get art either--that's why I'm glad I'm friends with Andrea who gets it! I knew she would have a good comment for this post. Sean and I went to MOMA in San Fran. Really cool for the first hour--after that...Booooring. Sorry Andrea.
modern art is too artsy fartsy. i don't get why a scribble on a canvas is so amazing... to me it's just lame.
i dig some art but i don't dig the modern stuff either. that Munch comment is still one of the best memories i have at the BYU - you're hilarious!
