question of the week:

what's your favorite movie of all time?

******************

this is tricky. if i was still a kid i might have to say "xanadu"...goddesses on rollerskates? what could be cooler than that? or maybe "go towards the light," a made for tv movie about a mormon boy with aids that i used to watch every day after school. now that i'm a grown-up though, there are a few better options. i love the movie "life is beautiful." my mom tried to watch it several times but couldn't stand roberto benigni, but i love the story. it's about a jewish man in italy who marries a non-jewish woman and he and his son joshua get taken to a concentration camp. when his wife realizes what's happening she asks to get on the train too, even though she's not jewish. then the dad turns it all into a game to save his son from the horrors of the camp. it's a beautiful story. i love watching it in italian ("BONGIORNI, PRINCIPESA!") with subtitles, it's just not the same when it's dubbed in english.

another movie i love is "about a boy" with hugh grant. this movie is hilarious and devastating and redeeming all in one. i wish hugh grant had at least been nominated for an oscar because he is so good in this movie. i love that the boy talks about needing "back-up", that you can't make it through life with just two (he is raised by a single mom) because if one of you goes then you're on your own. "you need three at least." the only downside to this movie is the language. dave and i watched it again the other night and i had forgotten how much unnecessary cussing is included.

you all know i love "pride and prejudice", mostly the A&E version with colin firth (anything with colin firth in it is fine by me, even "what a girl wants" with amanda bynes...love those leather pants) but i'm pretty sure that's not my absolute favorite.

so what's my favorite movie of all time?

"finding neverland". without a doubt. have you seen this movie? i love that it's clean, first of all, i don't think there is any bad language at all. i also happen to think freddie highmore is one of the best actors i've ever seen, and he's like 10. i love the friendship that develops between james and sylvia. i love the casting (johnny depp and kate winslet are two of my very favorites). but mostly i love neverland. i love watching james's imagination show him the beauty of childhood and turning it into the story of peter pan. i love when the oldest boy grows up in an instant and james says "how extraordinary. in that moment the boy became a man." or when peter says that porthos is "just" a dog...james replies,

Porthos dreams of being a bear, and you want to shatter those dreams by saying he's *just* a dog? What a horrible candle-snuffing word. That's like saying, "He can't climb that mountain, he's just a man", or "That's not a diamond, it's just a rock." Just.

So there you have it. Finding Neverland.

What's yours?

Goodwill Hunting. I love when Ben Affleck tells Matt Damon that he would be mad if Matt Damon still worked at the brickyard in ten years. Meaning, you're not doing anybody any favors by not being your best self.

I'm not telling! You'll have to check my blog because I have a post in the works (seriously for like 2 weeks I've had the draft I just haven't been motivated to finish it). I promise I'll post it this week, ok or maybe next but no later than that!
When I was a kid my favorite movie was "Goonies" and I also really like "Message in a Bottle"--I think primarily for the love letters--beautifully written and so romantic!

Sheesh - even the preview almost made me cry. I love "Finding Neverland" too - we own it and I've watched it again and again and I find new parts to love each time. Great pick Em.

I don't know if I could choose just one all-time favorite. "I am Lengend" I guess is right up there. (I'm kidding of course!) Even though it's very un-original I LOVE Pride and Prejudice and the magic of watching Elizabeth's love story (I'll never forget the first time I saw it) but there are lots that I love. Cute post and good idea.

Hahaha! I bought Bridges of Madison County thinking it was about something other than a housewife having an affair! Jon was wondering why I bought it! I then donated it to the DI. I would have to concur with Finding Neverland. Not only do I like it, but Jon loves it and Claire is obsessed with anything to do with Peter Pan so it's a movie we can all enjoy together.

I am a total movie watching fiend, so I have a horrible time picking a favorite! I also enjoy Finding Neverland and love Pride and Prejudice (the Colin Firth one of course!). One movie that I can watch a million times is While You Were Sleeping. I love it. Its halarious and romantic. I find part of myself in Lucy. I'm sort of a hopeless romantic, so chickflicks are definitely up my alley, but give me a good action/adventure and i'm there too. (as you can tell I can't really answer this question well)

I'm not one to watch movies again and again (when there's so many good ones to watch! I'm this way with books, too.). I don't know if these are *favorites,* but I do enjoy watching them more than once, so that says something!

Found your blog through Emilie. :) My favorite movie of all time is Sound of Music. But Love Actually is a VERY close 2nd, and I "actually" (tee hee) watch it much more often than I do Sound of Music. :D (also... could you please email me... I'd like your help with something. :D reyanna at remyanna dot com. Thanks!) :)

We have Finding Neverland too. JAmes really wanted it for his birthday a few years ago, but come to think of it, I don't think we've watched it even once since we've had it. Hmmmm....

I think there are great movies from all different genres.

In comedy- The orginal Pink Panther movies and the Marx Brothers (back when movies were in Black in White). It's a toss up. If you haven't seen any of these, you just HAVE to.

I also think Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail is a classic.

Musical- It's gotta be "The Sound of Music". I've been listening to that on my parent's record player since I was old enough to walk.

Action/Drama - "The Lord of the Rings" series. Those movies are absolutely amazing!! I cannot believe the special effects and all the time that was put into those 3 incredible movies.

Love story- "Titanic" I think I saw that 5 times in the theater. I cried every single time too.

Animated film- "Finding Nemo" - This found a special place in my heart, especially after becoming a parent.

So, there you go. There are great movies in all their varieties. (:

well not just you, anybody. When I tell people that's my favorite movie they always look at me like I'm a sinner for liking a movie about adultery, but it's about WAY more than that.

Love your pick Emily! Fun topic..ones I can watch over & over: Runaway Bride, Ever After, The Count of Monte Christo, While you were Sleeping, That Thing You Do, Kate & Leopold, & any of The Mummy series--they're sooo funny. :P

I cannot pick a favorite. I like movies too much. I don't remember thinking Finding Neverland was that great though so you are all making me think I need to re-watch it!

Ellen I am judging you. ;-)
