Lessons I learned in Primary

One of my favorite hymns is "For the Beauty of the Earth" (Hymns #92). I learned it as a little girl and loved to hear it sung in Sacrament meeting. We sang it in our ward today in preparation for Thanksgiving and the beauty and power of this hymn struck me all over again. I was there without the boys (they're still sick with coughs and colds so Dave stayed home with them this week) and the pleasure of being in church by myself no doubt added to my feelings of gratitude. I am so thankful for all these things--the earth, my family, friends, so many things. A lesson I learned in Primary is to be thankful for everything that we have, and I am.

Painting by Monet, "Path Through the Corn at Pourville, 1882"

For the beauty of the earth, For the beauty of the skies,
For the love which from our birth Over and around us lies,
Lord of all, to thee we raise This our hymn of grateful praise.

For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree and flow'r, Sun and moon, and stars of light,
Lord of all, to thee we raise This our hymn of grateful praise.

For the joy of human love, Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth, and friends above, For all gentle thoughts and mild,
Lord of all, to thee we raise This our hymn of grateful praise.

When I was like 8, my friend and I made up a song called "For the Beauty of the Earth" and it wasn't for years later that I realized we copied most of the lyrics and music from this hymn. I guess it has a way of sinking into your brain!

P.S. I'm thankful to have you as a friend. I love your blog!

I didn't know that our church sung this song until after I heard it on the movie, "Little Women". For some reason I like it even more knowing that there are other religions singing this song too.

Our ward sang this today, too and I thought of Little Women! We all must be kindred spirits!
